Northern Africa
Tunisia and the Egyptian coasts of the Red Sea are popular bathing and diving destinations. But the countries have – in the hinterland – much more to offer. Tunisia is home to countless Roman ruins, ancient archaeological sites and lively Arabic medinas.
Many travelers also visit the Egyptian sights along the Nile as part of a Nile cruise.
Morocco offers cultural travelers and hikers a wide range of opportunities. The country’s cuisine is varied and aromatic.
Algeria has long been an insider tip for desert and trekking tours. However, the “unsafe” neighbors (Libya, Niger, Mali) have made the security situation confusing.
Best travel time:
Egypt: March to May, September to November
Tunisia: for beach holidaymakers May to October, those who also want to go inland should avoid the hottest summer months.
Morocco: spring and autumn, on the coast also summer.
medical infrastructure
Do your best not to experience it.
In addition to the standard Austrian vaccinations, typhus protection makes sense for trips away from the bathing resorts. In Egypt we also recommend them for cruises on the Nile, but not for pure bathing/diving holidays in the resorts on the Red Sea if you have booked an all-inclusive package.
The region is not rabies-free, immunoglobulin is not available.
Except for isolated reports from a remote oasis in Egypt, there is no risk, where the last outbreak (with few cases) was several years ago.
Medication for self-treatment of diarrhea is definitely useful. Beware of recommendations from local “specialists” advising you on local medicines. These are often outdated and not or no longer used in Europe for reasons of side effects.
Check vaccinations (or have them checked) about 6 weeks before departure.
Pack plenty of sunscreen.
Also for beach holidays, remember that you are visiting Muslim countries, for excursions outside the protected areas of their hotels you should pack skin-covering clothing and possibly also a hat for a visit to a mosque.
